CANONGATE has three novels in contention for Le Prince Maurice Prize, to be announced in June. We Are Now Beginning Our Descent by James Meek, Girl Meets Boy by Ali Smith, and United Agents client The End of Mr Y by Scarlett Thomas are on a long lost of nine books, which also include Jim Crace’s The Pesthouse (Picador) and Emma Darwin’s much-praised debut The Mathematics of Love (Headline Review). Now in its sixth year, the Prize celebrates literary love stories and is given in alternate years to an English- and a French-language novel, in honour of the Franco-British cultural history of Mauritius. The winner receives a trophy and an expenses-paid two-week holiday at Le Prince Maurice, a “writer’s retreat”.
