SLUMMY MUMMY TOP TEN DEBUT

slummy1.jpgCongratulations to Fiona Neil whose novel The Secret Life Of A Slummy Mummy has gone straight into The Sunday Times Hardback Fiction bestseller list at Number 10 in its first week of publication. It is a hilarious debut novel about modern motherhood from the writer of the hugely popular and entertaining Slummy Mummy column in The Times Magazine.

To celebrate the publication of Fiona’s novel the Queen of Aromatherapy, Micheline Arcier, has released a limited edition bath oil in honour of the book’s heroine. Calming and relaxing, Maman Chaotique provides a soothing safe haven from the daily dilemmas of marriage and motherhood.

Random House/Arrow Publishing Director Kate Elton acquired Neill’s first novel in a two-book deal from Simon Trewin at PFD for a good six-figure pre-empt.

Lucy Sweeney, the heroine of The Secret Life of a Slummy Mummy, has three sons, a husband on a short fuse and a tendency to domestic disaster. It has been years since the dirty washing pile was less than a metre high, months since she remembered to have sex, and a week since she last did the school run in pyjamas. When she begins a friendship with Sexy Domesticated Dad, a father on the same school run, the trail of white lies threatens to unravel and disaster looms. An irresistible first novel about the dilemmas of motherhood and modern marriage for those who never discovered their domestic goddess within.

Fiona Neill was features editor of Marie Claire for three years before becoming Assistant Editor of The Times Magazine. She is now a features writer on the magazine and lives in North London with her husband and three children.

Kate Elton says “Having been a fan of the column for months, I’m delighted to be publishing The Secret Life of a Slummy Mummy. Fiona’s created a wonderfully down-to-earth, human, flawed heroine we all absolutely fell in love with; Lucy Sweeney is a brilliant antidote to the intimidatingly perfect Yummy Mummy, and so funny that she made me laugh embarrassingly loudly on the tube!”

Simon Trewin says “Fiona is a huge new talent and I know that Kate Elton and her team will propel her to the very top. 2007 will be the year of the Slummy Mummy”
